Here we go again, another dodgy repair job….🙄 Bought this turntable on line at a reasonable price because the seller listed it as “not working”. Yes it was a gamble. I took a chance knowing how much our belt drive tech likes challenge….hahahaha🤦🏻 Anyway he confirms it has issue so takes the bottom off. As is often the case some one has already been in here & they clearly were not a proper tech. Bending brackets is NOT the correct way to fix issues! You need to find & fix the root cause otherwise the turntable will never perform as it should. If the bracket was meant to be bent then that is how the factory would have made it. There were other issues that needed to be sorted out as well so took longer to service than it normally would. And boy doesn’t he just love fixing tinkers mistakes! With our speaker tech in town it was time to catch up on quite a few outstanding jobs. After re capping I took this pair of Celestion Ditton 15 into our shop. Hooked them up & they didn’t sound quite right. Not so obvious when tested at home on a lower level HiFi system. The top end sounded “nasally”, not pleasant at all. I asked our tech to re check them on a previous visit. Nothing obviously wrong but on closer inspection he found the diaphragms on the tweeters had become stiff. So unable to move back & forth as intended which meant they were not going to sound right. We put the speakers aside & he finally found time to replace the tweeters with matching & correctly working examples. This is where our experience comes into it. By identifying that these speakers weren’t quite right & then having the resources & parts to repair them. Ultimately the buyer will be getting a pair of Celestion Ditton 15 that work as they should! Stunning restored vintage JBL 3 way “Bookshelf” Speakers model 120Ti circa 1987. 50 kgs of absolutely wonderful, classic JBL goodness in near perfect condition! With a heritage that can be traced all the way back to the famous 4310 Studio Monitors of the late 1960’s the 120Ti reflect thoughtful evolution of the original concept. Higher power handling, improved drivers, crossovers & wiring & speaker terminals. These classic JBL’s were snapped up today by one of our regular customers. He was too smart to wait around, he knew they were coming & was waiting at our door this morning. Woofers correctly re foamed by our speaker guru. Very rare restored vintage Toshiba 3 way speakers model SS-510 circa mid 1970’s. When was the last time you saw a pair of vintage speakers branded Toshiba? In 6 years these are the only pair we have had. Excellent build quality with thick wall cabinets, nice genuine timber veneer & quite complex crossovers. No grilles but you do get mesh covering the drivers for protection. A customer liked them so much this pair sold quickly. One of NAD’s finest! Good things do come in smaller packages…… Restored vintage NAD Stereo Amplifier model 3140 circa 1980. This magnificent amp flys under the radar. Over shadowed by its little brother, the famous model 3020. However it might surprise people to know that the 3140 is an even better version of the 3020. Double the power output (40w x 2) but this model is not like any normal 40w amplifier. The power supply unit is supported by not your usual single transformer but 2 in this model! So you get huge dynamic headroom which makes this model sound much bigger than it really is! It also means you can run a wide range of speakers with this amp & you won’t have any issues with over loading the circuitry. In fact the 3140 model won an award in 1981 so even the critics were impressed. Beautiful restored vintage Sansui AM-FM Stereo Receiver model 661 circa 1973. Part of range that started with a model 221 (10w x 2) & went all the way to a 881 (60w x 2) this one is third from the top of the range. I don’t think we were able to buy all of the models here in Australia. We have seen & owned many 331 & 771 variants which makes this 661 a little bit rarer. Considered a budget model in its time however the engineering & sound quality did not reflect this. Renown for delivering a smooth & warm sound these models are still highly sort after today. Mint restored vintage Realistic AM/FM Stereo Receiver model STA850 circa 1982. With this model we are starting to see the transition away from the traditional incandescent globes & analogue meters to modern LED’s. Not too far into the future the silver alloy knobs & faceplates disappeared too. The future consisted of slimline styling, painted silver instead of brushed alloy, then soon after black became the new “silver”. Pressure sensitive touch pads & small push buttons replaced the big shiny knobs! Not as highly sort after as the iconic Marantz, Sansui & Pioneer receivers, however it is well built & still does an impressive job but at a cheaper price. Restored vintage Onkyo Integra Stereo Amplifier circa 1989. We have had a few from this series over the years. Like all Onkyo models excellent build quality is a given. Made in Japan & capable of 80w x 2 into 8 ohms with a very impressive & low, Total Harmonic Distortion figure of .008%. And lots more into 4 ohms, 110w x 2! Buying unserviced vintage Hi Fi speakers comes with various risks, some are obvious (like blown drivers) & others less so….. Beautiful vintage high end Rogers Stand Mount Speakers model Studio 1A. Whenever we get a pair of Rogers speakers for the shop there are certain issues we know we have to check for. Apart from the standard re capping, some models are known to suffer from failing & crumbling acoustic foam. In really bad cases we just find a pile of dust in the bottom of a box. On initial inspection the foam in this pair looked OK, in reality it wasn’t, falling apart when I touch it. So it all had to come out to be replaced with modern foam. Really lucky to have found a very similar product 40 years later. This type of job we don’t do in the shop as it is way too messy. There is no way these wonderful speakers (or any speakers) would ever sound as good as they could with the old foam failing or lying in a pile in the bottom of the cabinet. Hence why when you read reviews on line of old speakers, sometimes opinions vary significantly on how good they sound! Not as highly sort after as the better known Pioneer, Sansui or Marantz models however it still impresses in its own right. After attending a cracking 40th Birthday the night before there was only one thing to do! Continue to party with the Cerwin Vega 211-R’s! The night before sound was provided by professional grade Yamaha speakers fitted with horn loaded compression drivers to cover the mid & high frequency’s. After a couple of hours it became tiring listening to this combination. Too bright ¬t pleasant. Hence why the vast majority of Hi Fi speakers aren’t configured this way. Somewhat ironically the Cerwin Vega’s do have a horn driver for the mids facing backwards. It’s a wrap! Again we have had to replace the peeling faux woodgrain vinyl on a vintage receiver cabinet. This time it is a Yamaha & it seems Yamaha, Sansui & Pioneer used the same material to cover their cabinets. We have seen the same problem on all of the aforementioned brands. We can’t sell high quality restored vintage HiFi with missing strips of vinyl so had to find a solution. So with the old vinyl removed we re covered the cabinet in new material. One of the best restoration our speaker tech has ever carried out. Vintage Cerwin Vega model 211-R circa late 1970’s. Brought in by an existing customer these had very strong sentimental value. With strong memories of listening to these when his uncle owned them many years ago he now wanted them restored back to original. Initially our tech didn’t want to take them on as they were in really poor shape, with no drivers working, grilles covers missing, loose internal bracing & being home to rodents at some stage! Hence why the rear openings were blocked off in the “before” photos! So what did he do? Both woofers were re coned using quality USA made cone & voice coil kits. Horn driver housings were affected by powdery corrosion so they were sanded & re painted. Then rebuilt using new diaphragms. Original front mounted tweeters restored. Loose internal bracing re glued. Add extra damping. Various parts re painted including back of cabinets. Crossovers checked. L pads on rear serviced. External veneer sanded, damage filled, dents removed, stained & oiled multiple coats. Completely new grille frames constructed with new two tone cloth & badges fitted. Our tech only had images from an old brochure he found on the net to make these from! Very impressive to get these looking so close to the originals! In the end a huge transformation! Mint restored vintage Sansui Stereo receiver model 210A circa 1972. At only 2 x 10 watts per channel this little beauty is not what you would buy if you were looking for a window rattler. However in a smaller room matched with the right speakers it definitely impresses. Testing this one at home it really impressed me & didn’t seem to be lacking much. It is the second time we have owned this Sansui, our customer brought it back to trade up. Beautiful restored Vintage NAD Stereo Amplifier model 3020 circa 1980. What a beauty this one is, possibly the best version of this iconic amp that we have ever had. Have a look at the rear panel, these often have signs of rust in that area, especially along the bottom section, not this one! This unit popped up for sale on line for a cheap price, so it sold quickly. Soon after it re appeared again, for a cheap price. This time our tech was super quick & was able to buy it. The best thing that could have happened to this neglected deck. Not surprisingly when he got it home & tested it it didn’t work at all. When he opened it up it became obvious it needed a real lot of work! Hence why it was offloaded a couple of times. Physically it didn’t look great either with scratches on the head cover, corrosion on some parts & all covered in years of dust. Credit to our tech for the brilliant detailing of the head cover & VU meters & general cleaning after he completed the service. We then performed the final detail to add the sparkle. Did you know we can service/repair your vintage HiFi? This magnificient Sansui Four Channel Monster Receiver circa 1974 came in for a service. So not for sale. Other’s had a go at it but couldn’t fix it. One comment noted…. “too hard to get to transistors…..” Implying the transistors were faulty & the tech was too lazy to take them out to check. In the end the transistors were fine & the big filter capacitors needed to be replaced. A full service was completed as well. LED globes fitted & due to corrosion, the base plate was repainted. Cleaned inside & out. Once repaired & tested our tech made specific mention of the wonderful sound quality this receiver produced. Job completed in good time & our customer was so impressed. WARNING - Vintage HiFi porn! Rare in Australia, restored vintage Pioneer Stereo Receiver model SX880 circa 1978. 2 x 60 per channel. The 1970’s Pioneer SX xx50 & xx80 receivers are some of the best looking receivers ever made. This series is famous for being topped by Pioneer’s most powerful model ever made, the highly regarded SX1980 which was capable of delivering a very impressive 279 watts per channel into 8 ohms! We have done a lot of work to this one, mainly on the cabinet. This series suffer from the frustrating issue of the thin vinyl woodgrain lifting & peeling off. Have also seen it on Sansui & other brands. Recovered the cabinet top & sides but not before repainting the vent. Annoyingly this could not be removed so had to mask around it. Once fully dry had to mask over this to spray glue onto the rest of the cabinet top so I could apply the wrap. Overall very slow process! You are looking at 2 different pairs of iconic JBL model L112 speakers. The first photo shows a pair our speaker tech is restoring right now. The other photos show a pair the same tech restored & completed in December 2023. The end result was a pair of classic JBL speakers that looked almost like new. Update time, Cerwin Vega restoration! A little while ago we took in a pair of vintage Cerwin Vega speakers model 211-R. They belonged to the uncle of our customer, held great sentimental value so he was very keen to have them restored. This is a big job so the restoration isn’t going to happen overnight. However I am happy to say we have been making progress. Fresh in our shop are this stunning pair of restored vintage Wharfedale 3 way speakers model Glendale 3 circa 1971. We are very lucky! It is not easy to find speakers of this vintage in this condition. Apart from the style & heritage, what I really like about these beauties is the fact that they will match well with low to mid powered amplifiers & receivers. Eg 10 - 40w per channel. It can be challenging to find decent quality & efficient speakers to match well with a 1970’s 15 watt per channel amplifier. Perfect addition to any MCM decor because they were from the era, not a modern speaker made to look “retro”. And without the price of a modern “retro” speaker! Checkout the photo of the speakers on our sideboard. The genuine Teak veneer matches perfectly with our MCM sideboard. You could be fooled into believing the veneer came from the same tree! From the much loved & iconic Gold Series of Marantz products that were introduced in the late 1970’s. Normally about now I go off on a rant about shoddy service/repair workmanship by unskilled individuals but in this situation the wire has been there since new! From the Marantz factory! When this unit was being assembled the person responsible didn’t check to see if the wire was clear before doing up the nut! Over time, as plastics age & become brittle exacerbated with the stresses of movement, the insulation would have broken down leading to a serious failure. Mint restored vintage Aurex-Toshiba Stereo Amplifier & Matching Tuner model SB-A50 & ST-T50 circa early 1980’s. Combining exquisite detailing & outstanding condition makes this pair a very attractive combination. Produced during the crossover period where manufacturers were moving away from analogue meters & conventional bulbs to LED indicators. On this pair we see LED power meters but a conventional dial for the tuner. So the tuner pre dates LED read outs for radio stations whilst the amplifier has already moved away from analogue meters. Very nice restored vintage Yamaha Stereo Amplifier model CA-610, circa 1977. Unlike any other you are likely to see! We had to restore the cover……. A previous owner had done a very poor job of glueing down lifted edges of the original vinyl covering. Mainly around the vent. You can see the discolouration in the before photos. We could not offer this Yamaha for sale like this, just didn’t meet our standards. They did a terrible job, using the wrong glue meant the finished result was lumpy & uneven. Instead of the vinyl being flat & smooth like the factory finish. I wish we had picked this amplifier up before a mess was made of the “repair” job, so we could have fixed it properly. We only recently did a similar job on one of our Receivers, but you wouldn’t pick it. Anyway after looking at it for weeks I decided it was time to do something about it. Removed the vent, stripped the paint & repainted this with a tough & heavy duty paint. Stripped off the old vinyl (reluctantly because it was thick & of good quality), sanded the cabinet with particular attention to the glued area & the vent edges. Re applied new vinyl including tucking it under the vent so the new owner will never have issues with the edges lifting again. Now looking better than original, thats how we try to do things! Very nice restored vintage Rotel Stereo Receiver model RX303. Circa mid 1970’s. A lot of work went into this one. Our technician even replaced a bad transformer! Quite grubby when we got it plus someone, many years ago had stuck Dymo labels along the front panel for old AM radio stations & other functions. Clearly for someone who must have been visually impaired. Yes it would have been good to have taken a before photo🙄… We put it through our cleaning & detailing process, expecting this to be a straight forward job, however that wasn’t the case. Originally not intending to take the electronics out of the cabinet, reluctantly I decided to do this because the dial glass was too dirty on the inside! How does that happen…. The cabinet was made out of plywood, some of the layers had started to separate so I applied fresh glue to stop it from getting worse. Now looking great, this is the kind of detail our customers will never see, but it is what we do to make ours the best restored vintage HiFi. Amplifier board out of a Mordaunt Short Active Subwoofer. Active subs are a critical component in a Surround Sound system. Not what we specialise in but they do have a place in a HiFi system where some extra bass is needed. Unfortunately & we are speaking generally, many of them fail prematurely. Primarily due to cost cutting leading to inadequate board design & component selection. We see this often in more modern components. As indicated by the a purple arrow, a section of this board copped excessive heat as indicated by the darker brown patch. Caused by underspecced capacitors & resistors in this area which were pushed beyond their limits, ran hot & eventually failed. So to prevent this from happening again the 2 new resistors (re purple arrows) were upgraded in quality & mounted on the heat sink instead of the board itself. A simple solution & a problem fixed for ever! Maybe should have been a factory upgrade…… Our tech also had to replaced the fuse holder as it wasn’t making proper contact. Repairing active subs isn’t always viable, so we ask for the model number before the sub comes in.
