Very nice restored vintage Hitachi Semi Automatic Turntable model HT-354 circa late 1970’s. A well engineered Japanese made Direct Drive model from Hitachi. Made during the peak period for record sales when companies were prepared to invest in turntables. Speed stability & wow flutter unmatched by most belt drive turntables then & now. Instead of buying new do the environment a favour & buy this beauty instead. Professionally serviced by a qualified tech then cleaned & detailed including a proper lid polish. Rare & mint vintage Bose Direct/Reflecting Speakers model 301 Music Monitor - II. When I first saw these I thought some Bose fan boy kid went nuts with some oversized Bose stickers because I thought surely Bose wouldn’t have whacked such a big logo on the grille cover….descreet they aren’t! The blue cones are unusual too! Especially when you compare them to the similar 301 Series II & Series III. I don’t think the “Monitor” Series were a better version. Not one but 2 vintage Yamaha Natural Sound Graphic Equalizer’s model EG-70. Ten Bands per channel model covering frequencies from as low as 30 Hz up to 16 KHz with each band covering 1 octave! So unlike many other slim line models this one will do a great job of most of the frequency range. Which is what a good Graphic Equaliser should do. During our 5 plus years of ownership we had not previously been able to offer these components. This series features quite distinctive black backed analogue meters. Most other models from this era had white or silver backed meters which don’t stand out as much as the black do. In early December we completed a full restoration on a customer owned Pioneer system. We did a post on the turntable but I missed the speakers. We also restored his vintage Pioneer CS-77A floor speakers including recapping the crossovers & servicing the L pads. The restoration included improving the physical appearance of the cabinets (& grille covers). Covered in genuine timber veneer, when exposed to the sun the rich warm colour will fade over time. That was the case with this pair, the tops were quite badly faded. Re colouring to match the sides was going to be a real nightmare, critically it must not be obvious that this has been done. Otherwise it just won’t look professional. Can’t get American Oak stain in Australia so tried another colour which has been successful for us in the past. Lo & behold the match was perfect! The aim is to make the speakers look like they haven’t been worked on but to look as original as possible. Cabinets & grilles cleaned, tops re stained, tops & sides re oiled. Along with an upgraded amplifier, from a Pioneer SA 5300 to a SA7300 this customer is now the proud owner of a beautiful fully restored mid 1970’s Pioneer HiFi system. We can do this for you! Sometimes small problems cause the biggest headaches. Months ago we bought this TOTL Marantz Power amplifier model 510 off a fellow who works at a Sydney based electronics repair shop. Well the amp hasn’t worked properly in our shop so sent it to one of our techs. We had to remove the knobs by unscrewing grub screws to get the face plate off. One knob came off fine but the other one just fell off because it had been “bodged up”! A piece of metal had been shoved in behind the shorter grub screw so there would be just enough metal to make contact with the switch shaft. Ironically I had noticed that this knob felt a bit loose on the shaft. Initially I wasn’t sure why they did this but in the photo you will see 2 different size grub screws. I then realised it was to compensate for the shorter screw. When the time came to refit knobs & grub screws, on one knob the grub screws wouldn’t screw all the way in to the switch shaft. So couldn’t be tightened up fully. WTF is going here🤔…..I then realised why it had been bodged up😡 Well now it was time to fix this frustrating little problem properly. But why did the one knob have this issue & why were there 2 sizes of grub screws? Which one was original? Do I need to re drill the holes for new larger grub screws? This could be tricky if I get the size or re tapping wrong. In the end I decided to try & fix the existing threads. I took a deep breath & carefully drilled out the bottom of the stubborn knob. Whilst trying not to take out too much metal or cause any damage to the good threads. Slowly re cut the threads with a matching tap. Finally both grub screws worked as they should. This pair are in mint condition because they had been sitting in the same spot since they were bought new. Came to us from rural NSW. Being Top Of The Line these 3 way floor standers are impressive in every way. They stand at 1000mm tall meaning you won’t be able to hide these on the bookshelf amongst some books hoping your partner won’t notice them! Built around a 30cm woofer & matching passive radiator Celestion quoted a remarkable frequency response down to 18 Hz! What I really like about Top Of The Line products is the fact that these usually have fewer compromises with manufacturers showcasing the best they could offer at the time. These Celestion are no different. We were keen to get these in before Xmas & since our tech has been working in the shop over the last few days, he was able to service them, including re capping crossovers with new higher quality Dayton & Mundorf capacitors. I haven’t heard them yet myself but apparently they do sound impressive! This amazing Sharp boombox with inbuilt record player, model VZ-2000 was picked up by a very grateful owner! He was so happy & appreciative which makes it all worthwhile. Whilst sound quality isn’t HiFi standard this unit has a capability that most turntables can’t emulate no matter how much you spend. The ability to play 2 sides without flipping the record! Checkout the video! With the customer in front of us initially we couldn’t get it to work properly. It has 2 cartridge/stylus so it can play both sides. Our tech did tells us one needed replacing. So we knew one side wasn’t right. We tested side A with the good stylus & it worked OK. Fitted it to side B & it worked OK too. So fitted a new stylus to side B. Now should be OK to test both sides & it should function as intended. When we played side A it didn’t sound right…WTF is going on😡 it just worked fine. Knowing this unit had been serviced by a capable tech it shouldn’t be an electronic issue, so I decided to check the stylus. Annoyingly the bonded stylus tip had fallen off. After months of work we finally completed a full restoration on this highly desirable combination. Still with the original owner who decided it was time to have it all restored! Every component repaired/serviced by our professional techs & then restored to look as close to new as possible. In fact 3 of our techs were involved & I did the physical restoration, clean & detail on the receiver & turntable. Yamaha CR2020 Receiver - After the service we restored the cabinet including removing the vent, stripping the old paint & repainting. Cabinet re stained & oiled. Cleaned & detailed. Luxman PD131 Turntable - After the service cleaned & detailed including lid polish. Arm set up ready to go. Our customer had a spare rare New Old Stock Supex cartridge but we didn’t have to use it. The original one still sounded fabulous, one of the best we have heard. Even our tech was extremely impressed. Yamaha NS1000 Monitors - These needed quite a bit of work due to one of the woofers being frozen. A common problem when the glue fails & the magnet shifts preventing the voice coil from moving in & out. Fortunately the voice coil wasn’t damaged. So woofer repaired, crossovers recapped, L pads serviced, drivers checked & cleaned & cabinets restored. Some restoration was carried out on the covers too. ESS AMT MONITOR Floor Speakers circa 1977. Incorporating ESS’s aclaimed Heil Air Motion Transformer tweeter, forerunner to the more commonly known ribbon tweeter. Beautifully handcrafted in the USA! Including the aforementioned tweeter, build quality is impressive throughout. Featuring 1” (25mm) thick cabinet panels. Covered in genuine walnut veneer, decent thickness too, not thin & flimsy. Heavy alloy speaker frames (similar to JBL). High quality grille cloth. Separate pedestal underneath Weighing in at 47 kgs each, these speakers were built to last, with no obvious signs of cost cutting. They sound wonderful, the 12” woofer seems to pair well in this combination with the unique tweeter. Most impressive is the soundstage, big & open & sounding great from various positions in our shop. Properly restored including recapping the crossovers & fitting much better connection terminals . The bottom “drivers” are passive radiators & our highly skilled speaker tech rebuilt them from bare frames! Re glued the speaker covers. This is what a REAL restoration looks like 😳 One of the most challenging restorations we have carried out on a very sad looking vintage Pioneer model PL A45 turntable. Checkout the before & after photos. From sad & neglected to fabulous, but only after a lot of time & effort. So what did we do? Professionally serviced by our highly skilled tech including fitting a new power lead. Base plate cleaned, masked, sanded & repainted with heavy duty tough paint. Removed flaky veneer from front of plinth & replaced with new veneer. Timber plinth cleaned, chips filled, sanded, stained & oiled. Pioneer badge removed & restored. Hinges sanded & painted. Sharp VZ-2000, rare monster boombox with in built record player. This pair came in for a service, actually the second was intended to be a spare parts unit. Great news! It’s done & everything works! Our highly skilled tech was able to fix the main one & all done in under 3 weeks, including sourcing parts from overseas & ordering a second lot of sliders because the he wasn’t happy with the quality of the first lot! He couldn’t fix the spare parts unit because he had to use parts out of this one to fix the main one. Critically, without the parts unit he wouldn’t have been able to fix the original unit! Fortunately the owner made the last minute decision to purchase the second unit. Otherwise we wouldn’t be here now! BLACK FRIDAY SALE this Friday - Sunday! Beautiful restored vintage Revox 10” Reel To Reel Player model A77 Series III circa 1973 - 1974. The iconic A77 series was introduced in 1967 & continued for nearly 10 years evolving through 3 variations. Any product that has a production run for 10 years has to be good! If it wasn’t it would have been quickly replaced & the manufacturer would be distancing themselves from the unsuccesful model as quickly as possible. In fact they were very well engineered, including 3 motor drive meaning capstan & reel motors are direct drive & the only belt is on the tape counter. Well built too being quite heavy for its size. Due to all this its reputation quickly grew & this model sold in huge numbers with many still surviving today. I am happy to say this is a good one ¬t only in looks! Our tech didn’t find anything scary once he opened it up. Carried out a standard service including replacing the complete idler wheel, the counter belt, re lapping the heads, replacing the burnt out indicator globe. Also had to order a replacement knob from overseas as one was broken. Tech comments were: “It worked well & had response to 20kHz which is the limit of the D/A converter used with the computer. Sweet sounding machine too”. As always tested extensively before handing over to us. Sold WITH new reels & hubs as per photos! Yes unlike other sellers what you see in the photos is what you get! Follow up on our recent post regarding a rare Sharp VZ2000 Boombox with inbuilt record player in for a service. Incredibly our tech has nearly finished it! A failed no longer available transistor mounted in the power rail failed early on during the service, once it was substituted with a beefer version progress became a little more straightforward. So far the cassette player has been repaired & radio is working fine. The interior needed a thorough clean out as seems like it had been stored in a skip bin. Two of these units were dropped off & parts had to be taken from the spare unit. Power switch, cassette tray, blown dial light, broken turntable circuit board & lots of screws. The turntable has had a general service & new belt fitted & is now working too! Even the original stylus (2 of) seem fine. Now just waiting on new slider controls before the unit can be completed. Possibly one of the nicest restored Sansui Receiver Model 331 you will see! Circa 1975. Like most of these do (& certain other brands too), this one completely lost its thin “ fake woodgrain” vinyl wrap covering the cabinet. So until I had come up with an acceptable solution I had buried this receiver right in the back of our storage facility…..it just wasn’t a priority. That was several years ago. I had previously wrapped several covers/cabinets with reasonable success, each time trying different little tricks to make it look as close to factory as possible. The challenge being to have no bubbles or blisters & to get the creases & corners sharp with no lifting edges, every time. I had an idea I was thinking of trying for quite sometime, if it didn’t work out I was going to end up with a mess. However as per the photos I am very happy with the result, this one has turned out the best & looks like a factory job. 😳😳😳 No you are not having problems with your insta feed! Not one but 2 rare holy grail Sharp VZ2000 monster Boomboxes with built in record players! Famous for their size & being able to play both sides of a record without having to flip it over. So what are these doing on a Classic HiFi post A fellow came in, he was desperate, couldn’t find anyone to service one. This unit held lots of sentimental value for him. Was given to him by a respected teacher many years ago. On the condition he was not to sell it & now wanted to get it back up & running. We normally do not service these but this fellow was very keen & genuine, prepared to be patient, understood it would be a big challenge & importantly had a realistic budget. So we thought about it & said we couldn’t do it. Straight off the top of our head none of our 5 techs would take something like this on & said no. This is was a common theme for him unfortunately. He was even prepared to take it personally to WA to a tech there, but it seems one wasn’t enough for this guy! Off he goes & we think more about it, we really wanted to help him if we could. I then remembered one of our techs has serviced some boomboxes before so I call him & ask, pretty confident he would say “no”. “Sharp VZ2000, yeah I did one some months ago!” WTF did you say? “Yes you heard correctly, I have serviced one” So now that you are out of rehab is your mental state ready to take on another? Are they letting you near sharp instruments again….🤔 “Yes sure” he said. I couldn’t believe I heard this so rang the fellow back & said “its on!” He was overjoyed so out of gratitude he brings in TWO of these rare bad boys! The original one, & a second for parts but if we can we will try to get both up & running. Neither of them work which means it is going to be a serious challenge. You will see slight variations. It seems one is a European & the other “rest of the world” perhaps. If our tech gets both up & running it is very likely he would be one of a very small group of people who have serviced/repaired 3 Sharp VZ2000 Boomboxes! This beauty is rare & impressive! Restored vintage Teac Stereo Receiver model AG6500 circa 1972. With the original owners manual! Available at the same time the better known & highly regarded model AS100 amplifier was made. You can clearly see the styling similarities Teac employed at the time. Just a few years later this changed dramatically & became more generic. Whilst the AS100 is far more common the AG6500 receiver is heavier, slightly wider & more powerful. 50w x 2 per channel versus 40w x 2. Nowadays it flies under the radar somewhat. Exhibiting impressive & weighty build quality the AG6500 was also very well featured. Genuine timber veneer cover, 3 x speaker outputs, 2 x tape decks, switched/unswitched inputs, speaker fuse protection & finally main in/pre out options! This receiver was no cheap entry level model & would be comparable with the best of the time. For example you would normally only see 3 speaker outputs on the highest models in a manufacturers range. One of the nicest vintage Rega Planar 2’s you will ever see! Quite a time capsule! Second series Planar 2, circa mid 1980’s featuring Rega’s own, highly aclaimed & newly developed at the time, RB series one piece tone arm. *It took lots of “trail blazing” to develop this arm as one complete casting. No one had done anything like it before in any field of manufacturing! A fact recognised by US based “Modern Metals” magazine in 1985. Rega Research won a Merit Award & were presented with a certificate for their outstanding engineering achievement. Particularly noteworthy was a sentence at the bottom of the letter sent to Rega Research by Modern Metals notifying them of this award. The experts at Modern Metals were still trying to figure out how Morris Ashbury Castings Ltd., contracted by Rega Research, managed to produce such a long core hole down the centre of the tone arm so accurately! I bet staff & management at Morris Ashbury Castings Ltd & Rega Research were chuffed! It took a lot of “trial & error” to perfect the core hole & they managed to stump the experts! Very cool restored vintage Pioneer “3 in 1” Music Center with matching speakers. A “3 in 1” consisting of turntable, amplifier/tuner & cassette player all in one unit! Not strictly HiFi, however some of the better high end vintage 3 in 1 models did a very admirable job of music reproduction. This Pioneer model MS6500 is one of the those. Well built & heavy, nothing like the far more common cheaper models with plastic undersized platters etc. A lot of time & effort has been spent in preparing this combination for a new home. Fully serviced including the turntable, amplifier & cassette player. New belts in turntable & cassette deck, cleaned, lubricated, adjustments made & parts replaced as needed to make it reliable for a long time. We also fitted a new lid & Audio Technica stylus/cartridge. Speakers were also serviced, including upgrading all cables, adding acoustic material & replacing the old tweeter capacitors. Sealed & repainted the back panels. This system was pre ordered & has sold already, (except for the speakers due to the fact the buyer upgraded to a different pair). Customer brought in a wonderful pair of large Richter floor standing speakers for our speaker tech to check. One tweeter was down ¬t sounding quite right. So after a brief listen our tech carefully removes the suspect tweeter. He finds the voice coil was loose, in fact it had come adrift from the aluminium dome. The glue itself had failed! So the voice coil was very carefully aligned & glued back onto the dome. Fortunately this was brought to us before the situation became worse, either with voice coil wires rubbing through or wires breaking. If this had occurred we may not have been able to repair the tweeter. The voice coil wire is very fine & delicate, not easy to work with. Vintage Kenwood Floor Speakers model LS990. These Yamaha NS1000 lookalikes came in for a service. The most obvious issue was woofers that needed re foaming. Due to the failed foam surrounds the speakers had not been used for a long time. Our customer decided it was time for a proper check over & service. We put a signal through each speaker & confirmed all drivers made a sound. This is a good result as replacements for failed drivers are very hard or impossible to find. Meaning the repair could be uneconomical to complete leading to the speakers becoming “write offs” & only suitable for spare parts. By the time our tech started his own testing he found the mids were not working. We were both surprised. When he investigated further he found 2 badly corroded terminal connectors & 2 bad L pads. These would definitely contribute to intermittent issues because the mid drivers themselves tested fine. Two & half hours of transportation to our tech might have been enough to stop the mids from working. The Service included woofer re foam, crossovers re capped & 2 L pads replaced. As original L pads were no longer available, replacement required some clever adaption of alternatives. Plus terminal connector replacement & other bits & pieces. This is the value of properly servicing vintage speakers, otherwise you might be listening to a pair that aren’t working at their best. It isn’t often I push our techs to finish a service/repair job but I couldn’t wait to get this one in our shop. Big, heavy, bold & Top Of The Line the RA-1412 is considered to be one the best integrated models of the 1970’s. Rated at 110 watts per channel into 8 ohms, the “overkill” dual mono design, featuring 2 transformers contributes to this figure being quite under rated! Vintage Hitachi 3 way Floor Standing speakers. Classic 3 way design anchored by a large 12” woofer. On initial testing these mid 1970’s speakers impressed. We normally don’t expect a lot from Japanese speakers, unless they are from Pioneer or Yamaha, but were pleasantly surprised with the balanced sound & punchy bass these Hitachi’s delivered. The decent crossovers, built with 4 caps, have now been recapped & the L pads serviced. Next job is to clean & detail & will then be ready for sale. A customer brings in a vintage mid 1970’s Pioneer turntable for a service. At some stage in its previous life the original unique head shell went missing so customer orders one online & fits it. Job done! Or so he thought…… Even with his adhoc modifications it was never going to be right. Sound quality would always be compromised. All angles were completely wrong so there was no way the stylus would ever track properly. The original head shell was angled in towards the centre of the record to ensure precise placement of the stylus. Our tech had to make quite a few modifications to the aftermarket one to get the cartridge/stylus angled correctly. Sometimes it is better to let the professionals do the job & do it properly. Gorgeous & rare restored vintage Technics Fully Automatic Direct Drive model SL1300Mk2. Even better than the popular Mk1 version of which we have sold a few. The Mk 2 is quite rare, with better specs than the Mk 1 & the first turntable to feature an LED read out I am surprised there aren’t more around. We obtained this from a deceased estate a few years ago. Picked it up from the spot it had sat in since new. Restored vintage Rogers Bookshelf/Stand mount Speakers model LS6 circa early 1980’s. Here we have another pair in beautiful condition by a highly respected English brand! Made in England & finished in stunning genuine timber veneer!. Specially selected stock to meet our high visual & audio standards. Restored including replacing the original capacitors for modern upgraded equivalents. One port tube was loose so was re glued. What most buyers don’t realise is by doing this capacitor replacement or “re cap”, it involved the woofer having to be removed. This means you take the opportunity to closely examine everything. We recently cleared out a deceased estate & included was several hundred vintage HiFi magazines. These are great reference material & make for terrific reading. Here is an example of why we like operating with a team of technicians who have their own special skills. This Accuphase E204 is customer owned & came in with bad distortion. We took it to one of our amplifier technicians, this fellow has repaired/serviced 7 Accuphase models so far this year, so he knows his way around them. Amongst other issues he found an STK pack (or IC chip) was faulty. In fact it had a dry joint inside & unfortunately, being completely sealed package, he couldn’t tale it apart to repair. Not willing to use modern versions with questionable reliability he decided not to proceed any further. It is important to remember he/we include a warranty on all repairs so it doesn’t pay to fit questionable parts. We then took this Accuphase to one of our other techs. This one has a collection of spare parts. And yes he happened to have an original STK pack to suit this model Accuphase. So lucky! Yamaha’s Top of The Line in the 1973 - 1974 this masterpiece showcased the best Yamaha had to offer in an integrated amplifier. To buy the equivalent today would cost you many thousands of dollars! A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing😡 Another shonky job here before it came to us! Highly regarded vintage Marantz Stereo Receiver model 2270. This one is customer owned. Not for sale! Dan The Man bought this online to add to his collection of Marantz receivers. Hooks it up expecting big things but it didn’t live up to the hype. Somewhat surprising considering it already been serviced. Brings it into our store & we had a listen, it was flat, bass was muddy & overall dull ¬t very dynamic. So off it went to one of our techs. Rarely have I seen him so wound up. Some incompetent amateur decided to re cap most of it & our tech was not impressed at all & he let us know! There was one positive, they used good quality caps. HOWEVER, in critical parts of the amp they decided to change the capacitance values! This is not best practice at all. Slightly upgrading voltage values is OK but changing capacitance values is very risky. And if this wasn’t enough 3 capacitors were of the completely wrong type! So everyone of the “upgraded” caps was removed & replaced & before the cover was re fitted a proper service was performed. The last job left to do was to carry out a full clean & detail. Very impressive restored vintage Kenwood amplifier model KA 7300. Circa 1977. Wonderful build quality incorporating a dual power supply system built around 2 transformers. Vintage restored NAD Stereo Receiver Model 140 circa 1976. Their full name was “New Acoustic Dimension” or more commonly known as NAD, were new to the Australian HiFi scene when this model was released. The range comprised 3 models & this one was the “entry” level variant. That didn’t mean it was cheap & nasty. In fact the Stereo Buyers Guide “heartily recommended” the Model 140 in fact they noted it worked admirably well, the finish was of a very high standard & the price was quite competitive. Extraordinary High End CD Player- 18kg’s of Sony brilliance! Top Of The Line Sony CD Player model CDP-X7ESD. Made in Japan circa 1988. For a period of time Sony made some magnificent CD players & this was one of them. Build quality of the very highest standard with no short cuts whatsoever. So good it weighed more than many decent amplifiers! Unfortunately this period didn’t last long as cost cutting started to take a greater priority meaning later models were not as good. Making this CD player a rare & very special model & you certainly paid for it, launch price was US$2500! Which if converted to todays equivalent is about US$6650 or AU$10000! We recently picked up this one owner example with remote & original owners manual. It was sitting in its original dark location from when it had been bought new!
